چکیده

Recently, we have seen falling oil prices combined with sticky costs at a high level in the petroleum industry. This cause cost cuts and project postponements, thus challenging reserve replacement of oil companies and security of supply for consumers. Costs are particularly high for drilling. High rig rates are obviously important. In new contracts for high-spec semi rigs on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), e.g., the day rate has increased from 147,500 USD per day in July 2004 to 530,820 USD in September 2008, i.e., an increase of 260 per cent in four years. In addition we experience a dramatic fall in drilling productivity. This paper analyses the development in drilling productivity in exploration wells at the Norwegian continental shelf. We analyse a complete panel data set from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) with detailed information on all exploration wells drilled on the NCS from 1966 to 2008. The article also draws on a number of meetings, presentations and 1 We would express our thanks for rewarding conversations with and comments on the article itself from a number of key specialists in oil the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, oil companies, rig contractors and oil service enterprises.

Postglacial Faults in Fennoscandia: Targets for scientific drilling

During the last stages of the Weichselian glaciation (ca. 9,000–15,000 years B.P.), reduced ice loads and glacially affected stress fields resulted in active faulting in Fennoscandia with fault scarps up to 160 km long and up to 30m high. These postglacial (PG) faults are usually SE dipping, SW–NE oriented thrusts, and represent reactivated, pre-existing crustal discontinuities. Postglacial fau...

U.s. Geological survey core drilling on the atlantic shelf.

The first broad program of scientific shallow drilling on the U.S. Atlantic continental shelf has delineated rocks of Pleistocene to Late Cretaceous age, including phosphoritic Miocene strata, widespread Eocene carbonate deposits that serve as reflective seismic markers, and several regional unconformities. Two sites, off Maryland and New Jersey, showed light hydrocarbon gases having affinity t...

Sedimentary Carbon Oxidation and Denitrification on the Shelf Break of the Alaskan Beaufort and Chukchi Seas

Sediment-water fluxes were measured on transects across the northern Alaskan continental margin. Dissolved oxygen fluxes approximated total carbon dioxide fluxes when fluxes were low, but oxygen underestimated the higher total carbon dioxide fluxes. This follows a diagenetic model in which aerobic sediments occur below 86 μmol total carbon dioxide m -2 h -1 and anaerobic conditions intensify wi...
